Rehome your pet

Please view all of our available resources to help you resolve the issue you are experiencing with your pet. Behavior issues are the number one reason pets are relinquished to shelters, but most of them can be worked through if you are committed!

Unfortunately, we do not take animals from the public. We pull straight from the kill list at local animal control facilities and we are the last chance for the pets on that list. For each animal we would take from the public that is one more pet that has to die in a shelter.

We have a variety of ways we can help you help your pet, from ad placement resources, to low cost medical options, behavioral resources, help with food, and even advocating on your behalf if needed. We are a nonprofit organization run by volunteers with limited funding to help owners rehome their pets. Thank you for caring enough to try to keep your pet out of the shelter.

Help with behavior issues:
There are several choices for dog training in the greater Lee County area, from in-home services to private lessons. Occasionally dog training workshops are even offered by our local community colleges at extremely affordable rates! Here is a list of local dog training facilities who can very likely help you overcome the behavior problem you and your pet are experiencing.

How to find a new home for your pet:
For information on rehoming an animal yourself, or finding a home for a stray or homeless animal, Best Friends Animal Society’s How to Find Homes for Homeless Pets is a great resource.

Your first step is to send out an email blast to literally everyone in your address book. Include a photo, ask them to forward your email and to share it!

Make and post an adoption flyer for your pet. Take a photo of your pet and make a flyer using this easy template. Hang as many flyers as you can throughout your community, in places like the post office, grocery store, vet office, grooming salon, library, restaurant, pet food store, and gas station.

Contact local newspapers and ask to place a free classified ad for a found or free pet.

Mendota Reporter – (815) 539-9396
Ottawa Times – (815) 433-2000

Place a free ad on Craigslist. Be sure to interview and screen potential adopters to ensure that your pet is adopted by a great new family, and ask for a small rehoming fee.
