Our organization could not exist without volunteers. As a private, nonprofit organization, we rely on the assistance of caring and hard-working volunteers in all of our programs.
Volunteers are required to:
- submit an online application
- sign a Release and Waiver of Liability form
- if under 18 years of age, be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian
- possess a valid driver’s license, if driving a Safe House vehicle
- treat animals in our care with kindness and concern for their welfare
- represent themselves and Safe House in a professional manner and treat clients with respect

Adoption
Assist offsite adoption staff by answering questions from the public and facilitating introductions between potential adopters and our animals. Follow up with clients after adoption to check in and answer any questions or concerns.
Barn Cat Buddies
Promote Safe House’s Barn Cat Program by posting flyers in appropriate venues like feed stores, tack stores, or any place that farmers or horse lovers frequent! Find farm homes in need of barn cats through word of mouth, flyers, posters, any way you can! If necessary, visit the farm to ensure barn cat placement is appropriate; follow up with new farm adopters to ensure successful transition. (Note: this program saves hundreds of lives per year and most volunteers find it particularly rewarding!)
Behavior
Work with adoptable dogs on manners training and to reinforce basic obedience. Assist clients with dog behavior issues. Requirements: formal/professional dog training experience, behaviorist, etc.
eBay Sales Guru
List, sell, and ship donated items on eBay to raise funds for Safe House programs. Solicit product donations for eBay sales, encourage the development of the eBay program to contribute to Safe House goals.
Fundraising & Special Events
Our organization is completely dependent on donations. This committee assists in finding individual and business sponsors; oversees donor recognition; develops and assists with fundraising events.
Newsletter Manager
Edit our e-newsletter, which is published 2 times per month, depending upon editor availability. Seek out Safe House related news, featured pets, special events, and put together an issue to distribute by email. Time requirement is 30 minutes per publication, newsletter software used is MailChimp.
Medical Coordinator
Help fosters with medical questions, coordinate medical needs with veterinarians. Qualifications: Must have cell phone, internet access, patience, ability to handle stress. Veterinarian, vet tech, or medical background. Time commitment: 1-2 hours week on-call.
Photography, Videography & Design Team
Photogs: Take and post digital photos of shelter and foster animals for marketing materials; upload them to the Safe House Flickr group. Experience and DSLR camera strongly preferred. Videographers: Create fun and exciting videos promoting Safe House’s programs to further our goals. Designers: Help design our marketing materials for special events and media publications while adhering to brand identity.
Feline Spay/Neuter Program Coordinator
Schedule online and telephone appointments for our spay/neuter program, manage Spay Day drop-off’s and pick-up’s, answer questions from the community on this program, and keep this vital program running smoothly.
Time requirements: early Spring through early winter, 10+ hours/week, many of which can be spent at home. Internet connection and familiarity with Google Docs and Google Voice. Patience and excellent customer service. Possible paid position for the right candidate.
Transport
Transport dogs and cats from animal control facilities, foster homes, or veterinary clinics as needed. Requirements: Valid drivers license and insurance.
Volunteer Coordinator
Assist in all aspects of recruiting, orienting, determining placement of, and coordinating volunteers for Safe House departments.
