Everyone knows it's hard to beat the loyalty, spirit, and fun loving nature of a Labrador Retriever, and Bella is no exception. This purebred yellow lab is as silly and loving as it gets, and she is loyal beyond words. She is 3-4 years old and she is extremely eager to be adopted into a family she can bond with and love for the rest of her life. Bella's life has not been an easy one. When we rescued her, she had a heavy chain around her neck that was almost embedded. She flinched when you moved your arms fast; someone had clearly hit Bella in the past. A lot. It is a testament to her giant heart though, that she never let that stop her from loving and trusting again. Bella LOVES people, absolutely adores people! She also loves other dogs, cats, chickens, sheep, ducks, and pigs - she has done wonderfully around all of them! She is the embodiment of a joyful, happy pup. Bella has been with us for a few months as she has worked through her emotional damage caused by abuse. When she first arrived she was fearful of being hit and would nip out of fear; she does have one bite incident. (Bella bonded very closely with her first foster mom who was the first person that was ever kind to her, the foster mom allowed Bella on the couch and in bed, and when someone came between Bella and the foster on the couch, Bella nipped his hand.) We knew this was fear based only though, as Bella does not have an aggressive bone in her body. So we not only worked with Bella in her foster homes to move past these behaviors, but we also sent Bella to a professional training board-and-stay program where she amazed her trainers and passed her class with flying colors. Her trainer believes Bella is now a perfectly trustworthy, reliable, and safe dog who should have no issues again in the future in a responsible household. Although Bella adores children, because she has a bite incident, we have Bella listed as not being appropriate for homes with small children. Bella will need a home that provides her with structure and clear rules displaying proper pack order, like not being allowed to sleep in bed with people, giving her a crate to sleep/eat in (she LOVES her crate). Bella excels at clicker training and is eager to please and learn so she would benefit fantastically from additional training. She is crate trained, she is obedient, and she is truly a wonderful, wonderful dog who is filled with love and joy. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and tested negative for heartworm. All dogs have a $150 adoption fee. If you are interested in meeting or adopting this dog, please complete an adoption application at www.safehousepets.org/adopt and a volunteer will contact you promptly.
